As a psychiatrist, I see patients every day who have medical conditions that have been triggered completely or in part by anxiety.
Anxiety can have a very powerful effect on the human mind and body, especially when it’s chronic. These effects are felt in various parts of the body including the nervous, immune, cardiovascular, digestive and respiratory systems.
Chronic anxiety can actually impose a great deal of stress on the cardiovascular system, including increased blood pressure and pulse. Therefore untreated anxiety can increase the chances of experiencing a heart attack.
The conditions that patients mention most frequently to me caused by anxiety include depression, substance misuse, fatigue, headaches and insomnia.
If you’re experiencing anxiety that is causing you significant concern, make sure to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss treatment options.
