A 2017 review looked at 18 different studies found that magnesium did reduce anxiety. However, these studies were based on self-reports and therefore the conclusion was that more studies were needed to fully understand the role of magnesium in potentially reducing anxiety.

What type and level of anxiety is magnesium best to treat?

If somebody is experiencing acute anxiety, they should see a healthcare professional as soon as possible. Self treatment with supplements should not be an option in such a situation.

When should I take magnesium?

If you decide to take magnesium as a daily supplement then the most important thing is to take the recommended doses at the same time every day.

What are the side effects of magnesium supplements?

If you have too much magnesium you could experience side effects such as diarrhea, low blood pressure, nausea and lethargy. To avoid possible side effects The National Academy of Medicine recommends taking no more than 350 mg daily. Other sources make recommendations in a similar range.
